Notes: Shi Zhou Pian is an early text for learning characters, compiled in the Zhou dynasty by a historian of Emperor Xuan of Zhou (827-782 BCE), but now lost. However, the definitions of 223 characters from Shi Zhou Pian survive in Shuo Wen Jie Zi 说文解字 (Yong and Peng, 2008, pp. 25-27).
